Behind the name

Before Sungyata was Sungyata, we were calling it the Kwahu Sanctuary, because the aim of Sungyata is to be a place where people can come together and feel at home, feel safe, feel the sacredness of life itself & where nature is protected. Then the name Sungyata came in.

The project itself, has a spirit and a will, too.

Sungyata is pronounced as Sun - dja - ta.

The name Sungyata has different meanings.

SUN = Sun in English & GYATA = Lion in Twi (the local language).

Sun Lion. Lion of the Sun. Golden Lion. It can be interpreted in different ways. The deeper meaning of it is that everyone has a purpose, a talent, a gift and that when this is nurtured, when it has fertile soil, when it is watered and when the sun shines on it, it can grow.
We can grow into the person we are meant to be, we can follow our path & serve community, we can lead and be courageous like a lion

Sungyata. Sunjata. Sundiata Keita was a king and founder of the Mali empire.

They say he walked with the spirit of the Lion and the Buffalo. He was crippled when he was younger and ridiculed but managed to unite different people, of different tribes, languages and religions.

Sungyata, the center, has unity in diversity as one of its values. The spirit of Sungyata is also about welcoming different people, regardless of their background, religion and beliefs. We are all human beings, doing our best here on Earth. And we better make it work, together!

Sunyata. Śūnyatā. A philosophical concept in Buddhism. It's written differently, but it's almost written the same as Sungyata. Just one letter is added. The meaning of Sunyata is super profound & in a different way also tied to Sungyata.

Sunyata is so profound that it's almost difficult to describe it into words. It's mainly translated as 'emptiness'. Not emptiness because there is nothing there. It's more a void of the labels and identifications that we give to ourselves and everything that exists. It shows our interconnectedness.

For example: a flower is actually not a flower (it's empty of being a flower). It's only a flower because once there was a seed, fertile soil where it dan grow,  the sun that shines on it, the water it receives ... A flower is a flower because of all these things. So it doesn't exist on its own as a flower. It exists because of all these other things. It consists out of different things. This concept is similar to Ubuntu and teaches us how we are all interconnected.
